The much anticipated and high-spirited annual sanbank cricket match against Point Yacht Club was initially scheduled for a Saturday in April. Due to a number of external factors, the date of the match has been postponed. We are in communication with PYC and will announce the selected date for the match once a suitable date has been agreed upon.

WILDOCEANS is a division of WILDTRUST TM dedicated to the conservation and protection of our oceans.
It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. It is evident that because of our impact, marine ecosystems are drowning in trash, noise, oil, and carbon emissions. What we seem to forget is that covering more than 70 percent of the earth, our oceans are among the earth’s most valuable natural resources. They govern the weather, clean the air, help feed the world, and provide a living for millions. Because of overfishing, populations of marine species are either becoming depleted or very under populated in certain parts of the ocean. If we want future generations to enjoy the benefits our oceans provide, the time to act is now. It is against this background that WILDOCEANS was born in the context of accelerated plans for development in the Southern African marine sector and the sustainable development goals of the Blue Economy. Blue Crew The Blue Crew, a team of local female entrepreneurs; hope to address both the environmental and social challenges linked to waste accumulating along our coastline. These ambassadors for the blue economy clean up our coast daily and inspire others to do the same. The Blue Crew also barter the waste they collect with the WILDTRUST (who then recycle it) in exchange for cash, and thus generate livelihood support for themselves whilst cleaning up critical ecosystems. RNYC Property clean up & WILDOCEANS partnership We are very lucky to host a ‘Blue Crew’ of WILDOCEANS contract cleaners who clean up our property, shoreline and, tide permitting, the sandbank. Those of you frequenting the club will have noticed the crew in their blue overalls collecting from Mondays to Fridays. The WILDOCEANS team has a host of sponsors behind them which enables teams to be placed in different areas – from the mangrove swamps, via RNYC to the beachfront. Wendy is in charge of the team at RNYC so please stop to chat to her about WILDOCEANS when you next see her. CONCERT WITH A VIEW AT THE WATER’S EDGE
What a night! This past Friday, 14th February 2020, we tried something a little different. “Concert with a View at the Water’s Edge” was the promise, and we most certainly delivered! The Ndongeni Lawns were filled with picnic-goers, all eagerly awaiting the festivities of the evening. On the menu were a selection of scrumptious club favourites and a classic dessert and the kitchen had mouth watering aromas wafting through the Lowerdeck restaurant. Those who opted out of our home-cooked meal brought along their own picnics, many with a selection of classic South African concert snacks (BILTONG!) and others even brought along their own table decorations - perhaps next time we should have a little table deco contest?! Parable Fifteen and Zazz lit up the Ndongeni Lawns with their amazing performance and an incredible backdrop of the bay and harbour lights. They entertained with a selection of widely known covers, as well as some tantalising originals, leaving us wanting even more! A huge thank you goes out to Parable Fifteen, Zazz, October Sun Productions and we wish them all the best with The Vision Tour 2020 - definitely worth finding out where they’ll be playing near you! Thanks also go to all staff who worked that night and organised/ran the event - your efforts are greatly appreciated. It was a great evening with awesome people - definitely one to remember! This past Monday, on the 20th May, an open meeting was held at PYC to discuss the current general situation that our two Clubs find ourselves in, and specifically the negative effect that this is having on our sport of sailing. The meeting was attended by members of both the RNYC and PYC, however due to some confusion regarding the publication of the notice of the meeting, the ratio of PYC members to RNYC members was approximately 2:1. Notwithstanding this, the meeting was held in a good spirit of frank openness. Nigel Milne addressed the meeting and laid out some of the issues affecting both our Clubs, which included, but was not limited to, the following:
Nigel then opened the meeting to the floor and there were some insightful comments from both RNYC and PYC members. The general feeling from the floor was that both Clubs need to work together to forge a closer relationship that could realise the synergies that exist between us, and that this would prove beneficial in terms re-energising sailing, improving club utilisation and rationalising costs. It was also felt that the Clubs need to move with the times and embrace transformation. A joint committee has been formed consisting of an equal number of members of both Clubs to investigate the way forward. A friendly reminder that we have the following events coming up:

June Events:
The Royal Natal Yacht Club is actively involved in the promotion of all aspects of the leisure marine industry and we are always especially pleased to be able to assist in marine research. The University of Stellenbosch is currently engaged in an interesting study of the different types of marine growth in the various marinas around South Africa. We are delighted to provide assistance with the research which we are sure will be of benefit to boat owners and the environment. For more information read more here. RNYC membership now rewarded with additional member's privileges – earn points!
It is that time of year again when annual subscriptions are due and while some members may be considering the merits of continued membership we have been working hard to develop a package of enhanced membership privileges which will ensure greater membership value for our club members. The initiative commenced in April with the exclusive offer to members to renew their subscriptions before 15th April at the current year's subscription avoiding the 2019/20 traditional subscription increase. We effect from 1st June 2019 members in good standing will receive the usual member's discounted prices on all Food & Beverage purchases which on average amounts to 30% off the advertised price, in addition members will now receive loyalty points in the ratio of:
Member's upon renewing their membership in full within the month of June will receive a bonus of R 100 worth of loyalty points. Loyalty points are valid for the membership year in which they are accrued and can be redeemed for Food & Beverage purchases in the Club. The minimum redemption is R 200. It is hoped that members will use this added generous privilege of membership to patronise the Club at every opportunity. In addition members who pre-fund their Club account to settle Food & Beverage purchases, RNYC race entries or sailing fees will receive R 100 worth of loyalty points for every R 1000 deposited to their account. Watch out for bonus points when you celebrate your birthday at the Club and our ongoing promotions throughout the year which will provide a very compelling incentive for members to spend their valuable leisure time at the Club especially in the prevailing difficult economic environment. Gift cards will be available from 1 June 2019 if you would like to treat you family and friends to the RNYC lifestyle. Going forward we are busy working on day membership cards for visitors and will keep you up-to-date on the progress of this. |
